HAY BALE FIELD....

Christian thinks that the photograph below may have been taken near HAUS....

The Hay Bale scene has woodland on the left side of the settlement.

Suggest that the road is called "Grashausen" road in the background and that it runs alongside the Hay Bale field.

Suggested photograph of the location of the Hay Bale field which is located on the map to the right and linked to the two black and white photographs above....

The Hay Bale scene has the church on the right and a woodland on the left side. A road runs parallel to the Hay Bale field so the black and white photograph has some reason behind it because the camera is low and at a distance from the James Garner and Donald Pleasence Hay Bale.

The last building on the left is Markt Schwaben Philippuskirche (evang.) was inaugurated in May, 1955 and was built by American soldiers and many church members.

Markt Schwaben Philippuskirche (evang.) can be seen on the left and the other church on the right....and on the two maps below as 'Ev.Luth. Pfarramt'

The 'jump off the train' location was in the red rectangle and the 'Hay Bale' location was in the field immediately to the North of HAUS.

The Markt Schwaben Church Theory:

The church markings are all blurred into one from a distance - need to put The Great Escape DVD into a High definition computer to have a clearer picture of the markers. Two shutters or one shutter and a clock and window blended together for the other shutter!!

James Coburn came to MS to film the bike scene and it is therefore suggested that James Garner & Donald Pleasence came to MS to film the Hay Bale scene.

"Did you contact the city hall of Markt Schwaben to confirm the exact location of the Hay Bale Field ? Maybe you already asked them when you were there. They probably have information about the field that was rented for the movie, the name of the owner, the farmer, and where it was located because an authorization must be sought to shoot a film in a city." (Marie Fotini)

The two shutters theory, as suggested by Steve, is the result of the original design of the tower "merging together" due to distance from the camera. But if you magnify the tower you will notice that the actual design of the tower no longer is a two shutter image !!

Also if you look at the shapes of the buildings around the church (seen in the photo above) and the film clip at the top of this page then they appear very similar. We need the perfectly fit photograph to overlap the film clip and the modern perspective....
