Hopfen Am See

Steve McQueen lived in Deining when filming at the Bavaria Studios.

He then lived at the PERGOLA Am Hopfensee Hotel (now known as the ALPINA Hotel), Enzensberger Street 6 D 87629, Hopfen Am See Fussen 1330 in Apartment 6 for SIX weeks whilst filming in the Fussen and the Pfronten areas.

The other film stars living in the hotel were  James Coburn, Gordon Jackson, Nigel Stock, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and John & Dorothy Sturges.

{David McCallum & Bud Ekins stayed at the Hotel Hirsh, Fussen and the technicians & Walter Riml stayed at the Hotel Lisl, Hohenschwangau (near the castle). It is unknown where John Leyton lived during the filming of the boat scene in Fussen}

The 'Trip Wire' scene was filmed on the ST2008 road to the EAST of Hopfen Am See and the 'Switzerland' scene was filmed on the same road but on the WEST side of Hopfen Am See.

The staff in the Camping Hopfensee stated that the 'old trip wire' road was the BICHLWEG which could be found to the left of the 'new' cycle road and behind the row of trees. The owner of the camping site, Familre Merhl,  was a young man when the filming took place back in 1962....

The Landhaus Alpina was originally known as the Pergola Hotel. It was at this hotel that Steve McQueen, John Sturges and the actors listed below lived. This is my favourite page because I like the idea that McQueen may have had a 'lazy' moment and thought he only needed to pop out of his 'Pergola' hotel bed and take a few steps up the road into immortality...

When McQueen is filmed again at the trip wire scene, the film crew have moved to the Zell road area...

At the 'Trip Wire' bend in Hopfen Am See a large tree could be seen in the distance when looking in the other direction but in the actual film this tree did not exist which  meant that the 'Trip Wire' scene was actually made up of TWO different film locations...

Why was the 'Trip Wire' scene shot in two different locations?

Theory for the trip wire scene...

1. Hopfen Am See:
The trip wire was set up to snare the bike with Hopfen Am See in the background. The post, McQueen walks across the road to, has a small side road next to it. Then McQueen appears  in a German uniform on the bike and sets off down the winding road to Hopfen Am See.

2. Minor road known as 'The Zell Road':
Sturges then realises that he needs a shot of McQueen at the road post on the other side of the road. Here there is no small side road next to it ! McQueen drops down into ditch....the Zell Road.

3.  Minor road known as 'The Zell Road' also acts as a 'holding Road'
Why are there so many vehicles along this 'Zell road'? This road is down from the HUT scene. It is on the left as you travel away from the hut towards the town of Zell. This was a 'holding road' for all their film equipment. These German vehicles were used to travel to and from the hut when they were filming McQueen with his bike leaning up against the hut!! The trip wire scene was a small 'take'......not an all day set up. This is why the Zell road was so busy because they were filming up the road around the hut area...

(Note that although it is the same scene, McQueen wears shoes in one shot and then boots in the next shot!!)

The trip wire scene (part 2)...this scene below is on a 'minor' road just off the Zell road

This is the Zell road and it is suggested that when the camera filmed the scene but the crew have moved to a minor road just off  the 'Zell road'

1. The location of the HUT scene...

2. The road known as 'The Zell Road'...and where the second part of the 'trip wire' scene was filmed.

(A) Zell is to the west of Hopfen Am See...

"Switzerland"

Steve McQueen whispers "Switzerland" as he looks towards the town of Hopfen Am See which is where he lived during the filming of The Great escape...

The hotel today, is still in the style of the 1960's and the owner showed us around the hotel and photographs were captured.

The next day we were invited to have coffee and cake on the veranda and the very young 82 year old invited us to celebrate the 50th Anniversary in 2013 with a meal around the table used by the film stars back in 1962 !!

The Enzensberg sign points you towards the hotel, which is still available for bookings today, and looking back the view is spectacular....

The front door of the Pergola Hotel....

Just behind the front door is an image of Steve McQueen....

The owner has a 'mini' exhibition down the corridor...

At the end of this narrow corridor is John Sturges' room and Steve McQueen's room is off to the right....

Taking the stairway up leads into James Coburn's room....

Inside John Sturges room at the Hotel Pergola....

This is a view from John & Dorothy Sturges' window and is the area where the helicopter landed back in 1962 to take the film 'rushes' back to the Bavaria Studios, Munich.

James Coburn's room was at the top of the Pergola Hotel and looked directly over the beautiful Lake of Hopfensee....

James Coburn slept here: "The Manufacturer" occupied the room at the top in an apartment house in Hopfen am See. The hotel keeper remembers the put two beds together to meet the demands of the long-legged star.

Steve McQueen was based in Room 6..........view from the window and his King size bed.

The bathroom to the right of the wardrobe....

View from the shower window....

The dining table is where the film stars ate and the adjoining lounge is where they relaxed after a day of filming the scenes from The Great Escape....

The Kitchen area....

The owner of the renamed 'Pergola' Hotel................The Alpina.

There were only about three hotels in this area to choose from. Each room at the Pergola had its own bathroom which was rare back in 1962....

Today, the hotel is surrounded by many buildings including the 20,000,000 home owned by the Porsche cars executives....

Black and white photographs of the Pergola Hotel in 1962.

The 'trip wire' view with Hopfen Am See in the distance back in 1962 before the road was modernised and a cyclist pathway built....

Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Neile McQueen (?) relaxing on the veranda in 1962 at the Pergola Hotel which 50 years later is exactly the same....time has stood still as everything is as it was !!

Steve McQueen's car parked outside the Pergola in 1962...

The Hollywood stars were asked to sign a register on arrival. Charles Bronson chose not to....

John Sturges arrived on the 25th August 1962 and stayed for only one night....

John Sturges returned with his wife on the 22nd September 1962 and stayed until the 10th October 1962....

McQueen arrived at the Pergola Hotel on the 23rd September 1962 and stayed for 16 days. He signed out on the 9th October.... 1962....

The Guest book was full of comments made by the film stars....

John Leyton stayed at the Alpina on the 27th May 2014 with some friends...he had stayed at this hotel when it was called the Pergola back in 1962.
